This can be said because, even when isolated from the surrounding dermis, a curly hair follicle will continue to produce a curly hair shaft in vitro. The curl is the result of a modification of the differentiation programmes affecting all the compartments in the follicle, these being the connective tissue sheath, the matrix, the outer root sheath, the inner root sheath and the hair shaft itself.
