CERAMIDE R : FROM THE ADVENTURE TO THE PRODUCTS

"This Ceramide R shampoo makes my hair more beautiful". Generally speaking, we rarely wonder about the actual nature of products we use frequently. All that really matters is how easy they are to use and the results they produce. And yet, Ceramide R was the product of a wonderful research adventure leading from the microscope to the final bottle.

The facts are very simple. As time goes by, hair becomes damaged, and the cuticle falls victim to a number of different aggressions. Researchers therefore put all their efforts into finding out how this could be repaired. The first, crucial step was of course to study this cuticle in more detail. Which is how the adventure began...

1. Under the electronic microscope, the scales making up the cuticle appear to be a firmly held together by a cement rich in lipids. By transposing work carried out on the intercellular cement of the skin's corneous layer to hair, researchers were on the track of certain lipids - the ceramides . They discovered that these lipids play a major role in keeping the scales in place.

2. In order to be certain, researchers closely examined damaged hair - where they found confirmation, under the microscope, that in these hairs, the ceramides had disappeared.

3. Work then began on trying to imitate nature and produce a synthetic ceramide, identical to natural ceramides: this process of imitation is known as biomimetics . A genuinely creative process, this finally resulted in Ceramide R, the "R" standing for "Research".

4. But this was not the end of the story. Further research was need to check that Ceramide R behaved like natural ceramides and that it would occupy the spaces left empty by the disappearance of the original ceramides. This was carried out in Chicago using SIMS technology (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry). The tests were absolutely conclusive.

5. It only remained to be absolutely sure of the effect Ceramide R has on the cuticle. Various tests carried out by the L'Oréal laboratories finally proved that Ceramide R does repair damaged hair and restore the cuticle's resistance and fine, smooth aspect.

6. After ten years' work, the goal was finally reached. Incorporated into various vehicles, Ceramide R has become the basis for a whole new generation of hair products that genuinely repair damaged hair.
